Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Tuesday, Aug. 26
Taylor Swift has some experience when it comes to weddings — and once gave a romantic speech on the meaning of true love at her childhood best friend’s reception.
Swift announced her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce on Tuesday, Aug. 26 after two years of dating. But nine years earlier, her role wasn’t that of fiancée, but maid of honor, at the wedding of her longtime pal Britany LaManna (née Maack).
The “August” singer, 35, brought a Vogue reporter along to the wedding in February 2016 for an eventual cover story, which featured details of the speech Swift gave to attendees that day.
“Real love doesn’t mess with your head. Real love just is. Real love just endures. Real love maintains. Real love takes it page by page,” she said.
Elsewhere in the speech, as seen in a video shared to Vimeo, Swift praised her friend’s love as “so incredibly fated, just like the best love stories are.”

The Grammy winner and Kelce, 35, announced their engagement with a series of photos that showed their enchanting garden proposal. Kelce popped the question with an old mine brilliant cut diamond ring he designed with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.
"Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨," Swift wrote in the caption, echoing lyrics of her song “So High School,” which she wrote for Kelce.
The engagement came 13 days after Swift made her debut on his New Heights podcast, which recently broke the Guinness World Record for most concurrent views for a podcast on YouTube, with a total of 1.3 million.

On the podcast, she praised the athlete’s pursuit of her, saying his grand gesture of publicly declaring his interest in dating her made her feel like she “was in an ‘80s John Hughes movie.”
“I was like, ‘If this guy’s not crazy, which is a big if, but if he’s not crazy, then this is basically every song I’ve ever written since I was a teenager come to life,’” she said.
Elsewhere on the podcast, she described him as a “vibe booster in everyone’s life that he’s in,” while he described himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”
The happy news comes ahead of the Oct. 3 release of Swift’s upcoming 12th studio album The Life of a Showgirl.
