"I was like, 'Oh, look, If I take this, I think I’m gonna sleep.' I’m going to go sleep for eight hours," he recalled, adding that it suddenly became a "habit" and he "couldn’t even think of sleeping without Xanax."

While he was able to stop, he admitted there was a moment where he reconsidered taking Xanax again while performing at Rock am Ring in 2022.

Rossdale revealed he and Mastodon had played the same stage and he went over to take pictures of them.

"I’d just met Brent really quickly, and he asked me how I was doing," he recalled. "I’d been having trouble with my voice, and I wasn’t feeling good.

Rossdale continued: "I was like, 'When I’m in Europe, f--- it. I’m just going to take the Xanax. I’m just going to go back to my Xanax, and I had my little pill bottle with me. I was like, 'I’ll stop in a month, when I finish the tour. I just have to get through this tour with my voice.'"

Hinds ended up telling him about his experience with Xanax and "how he was addicted to it for way longer."

"He was telling me about how, actually, it makes you – everything slows down to the point of close to death," he recalled. "All your organs. Everything. Completely. Everything slows down. I just hugged him and was like, 'You just saved me because your wisdom and insight and experience have made me not do that.'"

Hinds died in a motorcycle crash on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the age of 51.In a statement shared to Instagram from Mastodon the following day, they wrote: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident."

Mastodon added: “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans," continued the band.

“At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent," they concluded.
